Redhill Common is a 25 ha Borough Council-owned Common and Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI). We have worked at this site on and off since the 1980s.
During the 1980s and 1990s, we managed the heather area, cleared and enhanced the entrance from Upper Bridge Road/Linkfield St, and restored the pond. Unfortunately, the pond did not receive the required management or care afterwards by the Borough Council, and is in the neglected state you find it today.
Currently, we are focused on removing the invasive laurel trees that have overtaken the Common near Whitepost Hill, making it difficult for native species to thrive. The visual impact is stark. What was once a dark and impenetrable woodland is now full of sunlight, oak and elm saplings and birdsong. Local residents often stop to chat on task days, and thank us for the positive difference we’ve made.
